Description
This database contains relational data on the affiliations of the members of the (foreign) international elite in Cairo and Alexandria, concentrating on the khedivial era (1867-1914). It is mainly based on a series of Western-language yearbooks published in Egypt as well as supplementary journals, almanachs, annuaries, etc. covering elite social relations. (2026)

Sub-set ‘Economy’ focusses on actors affiliated to the field of business and commerce. The organisations included are the listed enterprises mentioned in the yearbooks having in seat in Alexandria or Cairo. It is based on data retrieved from the yearbooks and also covers members of 28 boards of Belgian companies operating in Egypt between 1893 and 1947 and their respective relations with Belgian companies retrieved from the Recueil financier. Cut-off date is 1947.

Main dataset ‘EgyptElite’ combines all of the data in the specific subsets. It covers the relations of actors related to the aforementioned sectors ‘Diplomacy’, ‘International Mixed Governance’, ‘Culture-Science’, ‘Social-Ethnic-Religion’, ‘Economy’ and ‘Government’. It gives an in-depth look into the affiliations of the members of Egypt’s international community between 1867 and 1914 in particular. It is the most exhaustive sub-set, but the granularity and level of detail of the data varies across the different sectors, organisations and actors. Cut-off date is 1952.
